The STCW Basic Training course provides instruction and practical training in relevant safety skills necessary to work onboard a vessel in a variety of different roles with designated duties. STCW is an acronym for “Standards of Training and Certification for Watchkeepers”.

The STCW Convention requires that training leading to the issue of a certificate is 'approved'. A mariner who successfully completes the course will satisfy the following requirements: 1. Basic Training per STCW Code Section A-VI/1; and 46 CFR 11.302 (a) and 46 CFR 12.602 (a); 3. Basic Fire Fighting per 46 CFR 11.201 (h) (2) [Basic only] and 46 CFR 11.201 (h) (3); 4. the firefighting requirements for a national tankerman endorsement in 46 CFR STCW 10 TRAINING. STCW stands for “Standards for Training, Certification and Watch Keeping (for Seafarers) and was an international agreement established in 1978 among the IMO (International Maritime Organisation) countries. It has since seen two major sets of amendments; STCW 1995 and the current standard STCW 2010.

The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (or STCW), sets qualification standards for personnel on seagoing ships. These requirements have been incorporated into U.S. Regulation and Policy for certain personnel.
